Additional Information about materials that are or are NOT acceptable for use as backboard materials and which materials are prohibited.
Students are not permitted into the Regional Science Fair with regular cardboard display boards (see exception below) or Coroplast Displays
Acceptable Materials
- Wood products and dimensional lumber at least 6mm (1/4 inch) thick (includes plywood, particleboard, fibreboard, Masonite, and hardboard.
- Sintra, Intefoam, Intecell (These are trade names for smooth surfaced expanded PVC plastic foam board, up to 12mm (0.5 inch) thick, which is chemical resistant and fire retardant with flame spread not exceeding 150. (These are expensive)
- Flame-Rated Corrugated Products (These are made of factory-treated, fire retardant corrugated cardboard. They must display the certification mark of “WH (Warnock Hersey) Listed Fire Retardant Paper Product” (a UL – 94 equivalent)
- Metal
- Plexiglas/Acrylic
Prohibited Materials
Do not allow students to bring displays made of the following materials:
- Foam board – Plastic (PVC or polystyrene) foam sandwiched between sheets of paper product. Includes Foam core board Gator board.
- Paper products – Includes art board, Bainbridge board, cardboard, chipboard/grey board/milboard/newsboard (recycled paper boards), corrugated cardboard, mat board, Peterboro board.
- Plastic – Includes polyethylene sheeting (black/clear), foamed polystyrene (Styrofoam)
- Coroplast (corrugated plastic material commonly used on greenhouses.)
Size of Displays
The maximum size for displays is 1.2 m (4 feet) wide, 2 m high (6 feet 8 inches), and 80 cm (2 feet 8 inches) deep. Most students do not need a display anywhere near this size. I would suggest that a width of 60-90 cm (2-3 feet), a height of 1.2 m (4 feet) and a depth of 30-50 cm (12-20 inches) would fit most displays.
